Anderson Mother Arrested for Neglect in Child's Death
ANDERSON, Ind--The mother of an 18-month-old boy who police say died under suspicious circumstances has been arrested on charges of felony neglect of a dependent leading to death, according to The Herald Bulletin newspaper in Anderson.
Jennifer Harris was taken into custody Wednesday night. Harris' son, Harlan Haines, was transported to a local hospital in Anderson after being involved in a car accident February 24.
Medics found bruising on Harlan that they believe didn't come from the car crash along with pieces of a paper towel lodged in Harlan's throat. He died two days later.
Harris' boyfriend, 26-year-old Dylan Tate, was arrested in early April for violating a protective order that Harris obtained against him. Police interviewed Tate and said he was not a suspect in the child's death.
The investigation into the death of Harlan Haines is ongoing.
Harlan's father, Jackie, told RTV6 back in February that he knew there was more to the story and he regretted that he wasn't there for his son.
"I should have been there, I wasn't," said Jackie. "I won't ever forgive myself that I wasn't there to protect him. He just doesn't deserve this. He doesn't deserve it at all."
