ATF Investigating Accident at South Bend Bomb Disposal Site

SBPD Sgt. Harvey Mills was seriously injured in a training accident Tuesday afternoon.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- An accident at the South Bend police bomb disposal site is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at the request of Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon during a training exercise at the SBPF ordnance disposal facility on State Road 23.

Neither the ATF nor the South Bend Police Department are saying exactly what happened, but the incident seriously injured Sgt. Harvey Mills.

Mills was treated at Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for additional care.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg says Mills is in good spirits and is expected to recover.
