INDIANAPOLIS –The spring season started off with flooding rains.  By the end of April, we had more than a 3.5 inch surplus in the rain gauge.

The recent dry spell has erased all of that. We’re now below average for the year.

Each week, on Thursday, the drought monitor is released. Last week, the impact of the lack of rain started to surface. Abnormally dry conditions developed over southwestern areas.  That’s the first category before drought.

This week’s update shows the abnormally dry conditions have spread into much of central Indiana, including Indianapolis.

While we do have some rain chances on the way, the amount of rain could be lacking. Many areas are expected to see one inch or less between now and Tuesday.

For now, it may be a good idea to keep the sprinkler handy.
