DCS Report: 34 Children Died from Neglect or Abuse in 2012

The Indiana Department of Child Services reports that 34 child deaths in Indiana in fiscal 2012 resulted directly from abuse or neglect.

The Department reviewed 295 child deaths in all.  The causes also included gunshot wounds and drownings.  Among the abuse and neglect cases, the Department finds a pattern of one or more stress factors including unemployment, low income, substance abuse or domestic violence.  DCS had a history with seven of the victim children and their families.

The report also shows a trend toward younger victims. 60% of the children who died from abuse were one year old or younger. Of the neglect deaths, 63% were one or younger.

Director Mary Beth Bonaventura says the DCS can't handle this issue alone. She urges Hoosiers to call the Indiana Child Abuse Hotline at 800/800-5556 if they suspect any child is being abused or neglected.
