EMT Killed In Ambulance Crash In Miami County

Investigators say Mousa Chaban, 32, of Mishawaka was riding in the back of the ambulance taking care of a five-month old child when the driver fell asleep and caused the vehicle to crash.

PERU, Ind. – Police say an EMT has died after an ambulance crash Monday morning in Miami County.

Mousa Chaban, 32, of Mishawaka was riding in the back of the ambulance taking care of a five-month old child who was being transferred from a South Bend hospital to an Indianapolis hospital. 

Investigators say Christine Wesner, 26, of Wyatt was driving the ambulance on U.S. 31 at State Road 218 around 3:45 a.m. Monday when she failed to stop at a red light and hit a car.  The crash caused the ambulance to roll onto its side and throw Chaban out of the back of the ambulance. 

Officers believe Wesner fell asleep shortly before the crash.

Neither the infant, the mother, nor Wesner were hurt.  Two people in the other car were taken to the hospital.

Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol were involved.
