Fulton County Weighs Wind Farm Deal With Miami and Cass Counties
FULTON COUNTY, Ind. -- Wind farms are still not allowed in Fulton County, for now.
The county zoning board met last night to discuss a major wind farm proposal from Renewable Energy Systems (RES), which would have allowed 133 industrial turbines to be built throughout the county. It's part of a 300 turbine deal between Cass, Fulton, and Miami Counties in northern Indiana
After discussion a vote ended in a five-to-five stalemate which means commissioners are opting to take no action on the proposal for now. Much to the pleasure of many residents of all three counties who are fighting the construction of of turbines on their land.
Opponents site studies that suggest the turbines can cause headaches and other health side effects. They also say the turbines could affect student enrollment at local schools if they are built to close to the schools.
A representative with RES says not allowing the proposal to go through could end up costing Fulton County a lot of money. The company says it would create anywhere from 60 to 80 permanent jobs.
