Gary Mayor Unveils New Crime Prevention Plan

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson announced the city's new crime fighting plan Monday. 

Wilson says she's not expecting instant success but adds that the plan is comprehensive.  It's patterned after the NOLA for Life Initiative which she says has seen success in New Orleans.

Wilson says it treats crime as a public health threat.  She says the multi-pronged approach includes the coordination of law enforcement, intervention, prevention and rehabilitating people and communities. 

Wilson says the program includes bringing together community groups, ex-offender job programs, youth mentoring, truancy programs and more together into a holistic strategy.  She says the program is more about coordination, communication and tracking rather than additional funding.
