I-74 to Get Median Cable Barriers on Indy's Southeast Side

The barriers will stretch along 30 miles of I-74 between I-465 and the Decatur County Line at exit 123.

INDIANAPOLIS  -- Safety is key when it comes to traveling on the highway and to help ensure that safety, median cable barriers will be installed on I-74 on Indy's southeast side.

The cable barriers will stretch along 30 miles of I-74 between I-465 and the Decatur County Line at exit 123.

The Indiana Department of Transportation first started installing the barriers on higher traffic volume interstates in 2005 due to an increased number of crashes, especially median cross-over crashes where barriers don't exist, as they tend to be head-on and result in serious injuries and even death.

States that have installed these barriers report that have seen a decrease in cross median crash deaths of at least 90 percent.

The barriers are now on most Indiana rural interstates with grassy medians and this area of I-74 will be the final one in the east-central district to have them installed, according to a spokesperson for INDOT.

Drivers on I-74 should be alert for workers in the median and some temporary lane restrictions during the construction period.

The plan is to start the project as early as December, weather permitting, with the hope to be complete by next summer.
