IMPD: Burglar Shot After Kicking In The Wrong Door

A man was found shot by police after a family says he tried to bust in on them.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Metro Police say the burglar who was shot and killed this morning on the city's northeast side, may have been looking for the mother of his children.

The 34-year-old man went to the Cottages at Fall Creek apartment complex in the 5700 block of Wiebeck Court around 1 a.m. Friday. He kicked in the door the apartment he thought she was inside of, but then the person who lives there shot and killed him.

Unfortunately for the burglar, it was the wrong apartment, but the woman he was looking for did live at the complex. IMPD discovered that after they found a protective order against him from the woman he was looking for.

The apartment was occupied by a man and woman and their two young children, ages 2 and 4.

Police say the man who shot the burglar called 911 and surrender the gun he used to shot him to police as evidence. He will likely not face charges for killing the man since it was "self defense."

IMPD says this is the 11th self defense shooting death in Indianapolis this year.
