IMPD: Man Takes a Hammer to Confederate Marker

Marker at Garfield Park Was damaged Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS--There hasn't been any official move to move the confederate marker at Garfield Park since the discussion started last week, but police say a man took a hammer to the monument about noon Saturday.

Anthony Ventura, 30, was arrested and charged with vandalism, after IMPD got a call that someone was trying to destroy the marker.

When they got there, they found Ventura chipping away pieces of it with a hammer.

The marker commemorates the 1616 Confederate soldiers who died at Camp Morton in Indianapolis, during the Civil War.
