In Indy Visit, Sessions Praises Ten Point Coalition, Warns Rise in Violent Crime "Not a Blip"

Attorney general says police need to be proactive in rooting out crime

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Attorney General Jeff Sessions is praising Indy’s Ten Point Coalition in a visit to the group’s unofficial home base.

Sessions met behind closed doors with Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill, U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler, and 16 pastors from the anti-violence coalition at Barnes United Methodist Church, the church of coalition leader Charles Harrison on Indy's westside. Sessions says he's been impressed with the group's work at steering young people away from crime and gangs since its founding in Boston two decades ago.

But Sessions warned he fears an uptick in violent crime the last couple of years is "not a blip." He says police need to follow the coalition's example and attack crime from the ground up, using community-based policing to zero in on the people who neighborhood residents know are the source of trouble in their neighborhoods.

And Sessions says while the Justice Department can't cure crime, the government can do more to collaborate with local police.

Sessions said Americans' "hearts are broken" by the church massacre in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and called for "the Lord's blessings and comfort" to the families touched by the violence.
