Instead of Black Friday Shopping, DNR Invites Hoosiers to #OptOutside
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana's state parks are offering you a break from Black Friday shopping:
You can get in free today at any state park by downloading a coupon from the state parks Facebook page. It's part of the "Opt Outside" Black Friday promotion begun two years ago by outdoor-gear chain REI. If you pick Pokagon State Park, you can get an extra half hour of tobogganing time if you pay for an hour.
A second coupon will give you 20% off a meal at a state park inn.
The parks will hold a drawing at the end of the day to give away passes for next year and other prizes -- you enter by posting a photo of yourself to the page with the hashtag #OptOutside.
Ginger Murphy with the Department of Natural Resources says it's the second year Indiana's been part of the program. She says it's drawn a strong response -- the first photo was posted by a camper at the Raccoon State Recreation Area in Rockville at five minutes past midnight.
The outdoor-gear chain REI began the campaign the year before, closing its stores for Black Friday and lobbying state parks across the country to join in encouraging people to go outdoors instead.
