MORRISTOWN, Ind. -- Representative Luke Messer will officially make a run for the United States Senate in 2018.

Messer held his official announcement at his family's annual BBQ in Shelby County Saturday afternoon. Messer told 93 WIBC's Abdul Hakim-Shabazz that Indiana deserves better than what they're getting from current Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly.

"Hoosiers deserve a Senator who votes with them 100 percent of the time. Joe Donnelly doesn't do that," Messer said.

Messer was the first Republican to announce a plan to run for Senate. He's since been joined by five other Republicans, including Jasper state representative Mike Braun and fellow Congressman Todd Rokita.

Several state officials were at Saturday's announcement, along with Greg Pence, the brother of Vice President Mike Pence and Financial Chair for the Messer campaign.
