National High School Mock Trial Championship Picks Evansville for 2020 Competition
(EVANSVILLE) - Evansville will host the National High School Mock Trial Championship in 2020.
The competition pits teams of nine or ten aspiring lawyers against each other, playing the roles of attorneys and witnesses. They get the evidence and witness testimony in advance, but they have to prepare both a prosecution and defense case, because they don't know which side they'll be assigned till right before the competition. Teams aren't graded on whether a verdict goes their way, but how well they present their side, and how well they follow time limits and other rules.
Indianapolis hosted the championship four years ago. Collin Gruver with the Indiana Bar Foundation says Indy, northwest Indiana, and South Bend traditionally field strong teams, but when organizers suggested returning to Indiana, the foundation wanted to hold the event in southern Indiana in hopes of reviving interest in the program there.
Last year's final drew 46 teams covering most of the U.S. and at least one foreign country.
The championship will be in Reno, Nevada, next year, and Athens, Georgia, in 2019.
