North Vernon Man Charged With Shooting, Killing Roommate

The Jennings County Sheriff's Office says Kelly Smith, 50, shot Carl McMurtrey, 40, in the pelvis after the two were fighting late Friday night.

NORTH VERNON, Ind. -- A North Vernon man has been arrested after officers say he shot and killed his roommate.

The Jennings County Sheriff's Office says Kelly Smith, 50, shot Carl McMurtrey, 40, in the pelvis after the two were fighting late Friday night.  Officers had shown up at Smith's house with a warrant for McMurtrey, but he was not there at the time.  After the officers left, McMurtrey showed up at the house later that day and Smith told him he had to leave.  The two started arguing and the sheriff's office says Smith shot McMurtrey in the leg near his pelvis.

McMurtrey later died at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.

Smith is in the Jennings County Jail facing murder and reckless homicide charges.
