The National Weather Service confirms nine tornadoes hit northern Indiana Tuesday.

Meteorologist Matt Friedlein with the NWS office in Chicago says three EF-1 tornadoes were confirmed near Lowell in Lake County and Demotte in Jasper County.  Two of those tornadoes originated in Indiana while the third crossed into the state from Illinois.

Meteorologist Nick Greenawalt with the NWS office in northern Indiana says one of the strongest tornadoes was an EF-1 which was on the ground for about seven miles and crossed from Wabash County into Kosciusko County.  Another EF-1 covered a shorter distance in Whitley County.

Two tornadoes, an EF-1 and EF-0, were confirmed near the town of Plymouth in Marshall County.  Another EF-1 tornado was confirmed in the town of LaGrange.  Also in Kosciusko County, an EF-0 was confirmed near the town of Milford.

Greenawalt says straight line winds caused heavy damage across northern Indiana including uprooted trees, damaged crops and structural damage.  He says surveys show wind speeds between 80 to 90 miles per hour.
