Pence in South Korea: The Gay Athlete Meeting and Fred Warmbier

VP Pence is denying an openly figure skater refused a meeting with him. He did meet with Otto Warmbier's dad.

SEOUL, South Korea--Vice President Mike Pence is blasting reports U.S. Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon turned down a request from Pence's office for a meeting between the two.

Pence tweeted #FAKENEWS earlier today. While Pence was tweeting, a White House official was telling a slightly different story to reporters traveling with Pence in South Korea. The official says Pence's office got in touch with the U.S. Olympic Committee to offer Rippon an opportunity to meet with Pence.

"USA Today" reported Pence's staff reached out to the USOC after Rippon criticized Pence last month. Rippon is openly gay. When Pence was governor of Indiana, he signed a religious freedom bill considered hostile to the LGBT community

Pence will attend the opening ceremonies today.

"Karen & I landed in Seoul for important conversations with South Korean President Moon. The U.S & our global allies will continue to intensify our maximum pressure campaign on N. Korea until it abandons its nuclear & ballistic missile programs once & for all. #VPinASIA," he Tweeted, as he began his visit to South Korea.

Pence met with Fred Warmbier, whose son died in the U.S., after returning from a North Korean prison.

"Karen & I were honored to meet w/ victims of the oppressive North Korean regime. We heard the harrowing stories of defectors who risked life & limb for freedom, & from Fred Warmbier, father of the late Otto Warmbier. We admire their resilience. #VPinASIA," Tweeted Pence.
