Race Day Safety: Additional Security Measures

SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- World events are what prompted some additional security measures at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for race day. IMS Pres. Doug Boles, says know where you are going to park, where you are going to sit, and get there early.

"World events is really kind of what pushed us into this," said Mike Bates, head of safety and security for IMS. He said several concrete barriers are going up in places where there are normally a lot of people walking.

"We have a large concentration of people with current events as far as vehicle incursions across the world. That's important to us," said Bates, referring to attacks where people have been run over on purpose.

Boles said to help protect people who are walking, vehicle traffic will not be let out until all the walkers are out of the speedway.

"There may be a period of time where traffic feels stopped in the speedway. That is because we're waiting to get those on foot out. That also goes for some of the roads that are close," said Boles.

He said you can find info on what to do if you plan to be dropped off, or ride to the speedway on a bus from downtown, at the IMS website.
