Rokita: Proposed House Budget Will Lower National Debt

He says it will help the less fortunate and make the country more self-reliant.

WASHINGTON---U.S. Congressman Todd Rokita of District 4 in Indiana spoke on the House Floor in Washington Wednesday. He said he is in favor of the House Budget Committee's budget for the 2018 Fiscal Year. Rokita believes the budget is a realistic vision for governance that balances within a decade.

"This budget begins to put these irresponsible, elitist policies behind us and creates a culture around here that makes sure that our friends and neighbors who really need the help get the help without forcing our nation's bills on our children and grandchildren," Rokita said.

Rokita feels that one of the budget's biggest assets is that it reforms mandatory spending to help decrease the U.S. national debt.

"This will ensure that our country will focus limited resources on those who are most vulnerable while encouraging a culture of self-reliance instead of government dependence," Rokita said.

He then closed his remarks with a quote from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

"As Ronald Reagan once said, 'We don't have a trillion dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough. We have a trillion dollar debt because we spend too much.' That is still true today, except that $1 trillion is now $20 trillion," Rokita said.

Rokita is running for U.S. Senate in 2018. He will face fellow Republican Congressman Luke Messer and others in the Republican primary. The winner of that primary will face Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly.
