Rollbacks No More: Rush County's Only Walmart is Closing

Walmart corporate decided to close the store due to "underperformance", Rushville officials said Thursday.

RUSHVILLE, Ind. -- The only Walmart in Rush County will close at the end of the month.

Officials from the City of Rushville, where the store is located, shared the news on Facebook Thursday morning.

"Walmart Corporate decided not to renew the store's lease because it was an 'older, smaller store that was underperforming'," the city wrote.

The closure will affect 95 employees.

The city has since announced that it will work with county leaders and the Eastern Indiana Workforce Development Board to provide "a variety of local options to help employ displaced Walmart workers."

When the store closes, Kroger and Save-A-Lot will be the only major grocery stores in the area. The closest Walmarts to Rusvhille are in Connersville, Shelbyville, Greenfield and New Castle.

Less than a month ago, Walmart announced it was raising its minimum wage and handing out bonuses due to the new tax law.
