Say Hello to ILEARN
A year after repealing the ISTEP exam, legislators have set the guidelines for what will replace it.
Indiana will still commission its own, Indiana-specific exam. But House Speaker Brian Bosma says the State Board of Education has instructions for seeking bids that will produce a test half as long with quicker results.
And Senate Education Chairman Dennis Kruse says the board will have the option to switch to an off-the-shelf test for ninth and 10th graders. The bill also encourages school districts to reduce the role that the rechristened ILEARN exam plays in teacher evaluations, with legislators planning to discuss next year whether to offer more precise guidance.
Students will take ISTEP one last time in 2018 to give the state enough time to prepare the new test, which will debut in 2019.
