Seven Wounded in Broad Ripple Shooting

Violence rocked an Indianapolis hot spot following the Independence Day holiday, leaving seven people injured, one critically, after a shooting in Broad Ripple early Saturday morning.

The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m. outside a shoe repair shop on Broad Ripple Avenue, between College and Carrollton Avenues.

The victims, six men and one woman, ran into an alley between two banks across the street.

One victim was treated and released at the scene. The critically injured man is being treated at St. Vincent Hospital.

Right now there's no word on what led up to the shooting. Police do say they have one person of interest in custody. Officers say they are having a hard time getting details from witnesses, since many of those who saw what happened scattered when the shooting started.

“There were quite a few people out walking around Broad Ripple Avenue on a typical Friday night, bouncing from bar to bar," said IMPD spokesman, Lt. Chris Bailey. "Someone opens fire in a crowd like that, we're lucky more people weren't hurt."

Police are asking anyone with information on either shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

The shooting comes the same weekend IMPD beefed up patrols in the area to coincide with Fourth of July holiday celebrations.
