Shooting at Indy Kroger Kills One Person Friday Night; Suspect Caught
INDIANAPOLIS- One person was shot and killed inside a Kroger store on the southside of Indianapolis Friday night.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the shooting happened inside the store in the 4200 block of South East Street shortly after 8:15 pm.
When police arrived, they found the man lying on th ground from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect fled the scene, but not before carjacking another customer. He led police on a high-speed pursuit which ended in the 8400 block of U.S. 31 around 8:50 pm, when he crashed into several parked cars, fled on foot, and was subsequently caught.
Police arrested 37-year-old Jason Cooper after the chase. He is being charged with murder, but there could be other charges coming from the prosecutor's office.
Customers ran out of Kroger and fled to safety. No one else was injured.
"I was at Qdoba, about to leave with my food. This man and woman came in to stop me from going into the parking lot," said Amy Ihnen. "They said someone had just been shot, possibly another person stabbed at Kroger. They'd just gotten out from hiding behind the dumpsters in the back of Kroger."
Kroger officials released the following statement about the incident:
"This is a tragic situation. Fortunately, no one else was hurt. For now, we will strive to comfort shaken associates and do whatever we can to help police with the investigation."
