State Trooper Shot in the Head During Traffic Stop In Jeffersonville

Investigators say Trooper Morgenn Evans was shot by 79-year-old Oscar Kays Tuesday night. Trooper Evans is expected to survive and Kays faces a charge of Attempted Murder.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- An Indiana state trooper was shot in the head while running after someone in Jeffersonville, which is on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, across from Louisville.

The trooper has been identified as Morgenn Evans.
Investigators say Trooper Morgenn Evans attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 1999 Chevy Silverado being driven by 79-year-old Oscar Kays when Kays became combative and pulled a handgun before firing at Evans.

Evans was struck in the head but was able to return fire at Kays while the latter fled the scene.

Evans then returned to his car and gave chase for a short distance until Kays was able to escape. Police later found Kays at his home, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

Evans was transported to University of Lousiville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Kays was also transported to the same hospital with unspecified injuries.
