(INDIANAPOLIS) – As school starts to let out, Indiana’s summer school lunch program is revving up.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture began funding the Summer Food Service Program 40 years ago, to ensure kids who rely on the school lunch program don’t go without nutritious meals during the summer. Last year, Indiana served 3,000,000 meals statewide — 200,000 through the Indianapolis parks department alone.

IndyParks director Linda Broadfoot says about 25 parks will be among about 100 locations in Indianapolis serving free meals to kids this summer. All those locations will be open by Monday, though some are opening this week.

The program runs through August 3 and is available to all kids regardless of income level.
