Syringes, Medication Found Along County Line Rd. in Greenwood

Among the items was a paper with the address for the Center for Vein Restoration in Greenwood.

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Syringes, powerful medication and raw fluids are not something you'd expect to see on the side of the road.

But those pieces of medical waste were found on the side of County Line Road in Greenwood Thursday afternoon.

Gayle Petraits was driving down the road and saw "a lot of blue on the side of the road" on County Line Road near Summer Walk Drive. She looked closer and realized it was medical waste, likely from a garbage haul.

As a retired nurse, Petraits knew what she was looking at. She found, among other things:

  • IV set
  • Latex gloves
  • Surgical gowns
  • Ultrasound gel
  • Needle cover
  • Contaminated blood tube
  • Syringe

"If they've been used for a surgical procedure, my concern is blood or body fluid," Petraits said. "Obviously and we haven't taken necessary precautions to protect everyone."

Also in the trash was a box with the address for the Center for Vein Restoration in Greenwood, less than half a mile away from where the trash was found.

"What I would like to see is that if somebody drops something off there, they would take care of it," Petraits said.

The mess was cleaned up a short time later. It isn't known exactly who was hauling the materials or why they didn't stop to pick them up in the first place.

"It very much concerned me that it was out here on the street by a neighborhood with children," Petraits said.
