Winter Heating Assistance Program Goes Digital

Online applications available for first time for help for low-income families

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Applications begin Wednesday for an annual program to help you pay your winter heating bill -- but starting next week, you can apply online for the first time.

The state doesn't run the energy assistance program -- it's handled through 21 local agencies around the state. Indianapolis began online applications last winter, but the other 20 local offices which administer the energy assistance program didn't have that option. The state will launch a web application next Thursday at[embed]http://bit.ly/2ihpqrW.

You're eligible if your annual income is below 150% of the poverty line. For a family of four, that's $36,900. How much you receive depends on how many families sign up -- last year, 101,000 Hoosier families received an average of $510.
