Amtrak Train Derails, Cars Crash Onto Freeway in DuPont, Washington

At least 6 people have died and dozens more are hospitalized.

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- At least six people have died and dozens more are injured after an Amtrak passenger train derailed and sent several passenger cars off of an overpass onto Interstate 5 near Tacoma, Washington. 

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. local time during train #501's inaugural journey between Seattle and Portland, Oregon.

At least six people have died. 

Amtrak says there were 77 people passengers and five crew members on board at the time of the accident. 

The Pierce Co. Sheriff has confirmed drivers were injured by falling train cars.

President Trump is offering his thoughts for everyone involved in the train derailment. The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to rural Washington State to investigate the crash scene 20 miles south of Tacoma.
