Congress Tries To Avoid Government Shutdown

The government is about to run out of money, so they need to approve a spending extension.

WASHINGTON, D.C.  -- President Trump says the passage this week in Congress of the Republican’s tax reform bill is an historic achievement.  He said Americans will see more money in their paychecks very soon.  Trump predicts that the tax bill will lead to creation of more jobs and higher wages.  Vice President Mike Pence has called it a "middle class miracle."

More companies are announcing bonuses and wage hikes thanks to the passage of the tax reform bill.  AT&T said Wednesday it would pay its more than 200-thousand U.S. employees one-thousand dollars each and increase its capital spending by one-billion-dollars.  Comcast followed suit with special one-thousand dollar bonuses for its workforce, citing tax reform and the FCC's action on broadband.  At least two banks, Wells Fargo and Fifth Third also said they will boost their minimum wage for employees to 15-dollars an hour after President Trump signs the bill into law.  The Republican tax plan lowers the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent.

Now, Congress will work to avoid a government shutdown.  The federal government runs out of money late Friday night without a spending extension.  Senate and House Republicans may need some Democratic votes to approve a spending extension.

Democrats are pushing hard for an extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program and protection for so-called “Dreamers”, who have been identified as undocumented immigrants who were brought into the U.S. by their parents.
