Trump To Roll-Back Mandated Coverage Of Birth Control By Employers

Congressman Luke Messer calls it a victory for religious freedom

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Trump administration is undoing an Affordable Care Act requirement that mandates employer-provided health benefits to include birth control.

The new rule would allow more employers and insurers to exempt themselves for moral and religious reasons, something that Indiana Congressman Luke Messer says is a victory for religious freedom.

“The federal government should not be able to force family-run businesses to choose between following their faith and complying with a mandate that is inconsistent with their religious beliefs," Messer said in an emailed statement. "I, along with most Hoosiers, applaud the Trump administration for taking a strong stand to protect every American's First Amendment rights.”

Fellow Republican Jim Banks mirrors Messer's thoughs on the move.

"Employers who decide to follow their conscience should not suffer punishment from their government,” said Banks. “The Obama administration set a dangerous precedent for violating our religious liberty and I am pleased to see President Trump follow through on his promise to reverse the course and preserve the rights of conscience for all Americans.”

Millions of woman currently have free access to contraceptives because of the federal mandate.

Planned Parenthood says the Trump administration is taking aim at 62-million American women. Planned Parenthood Foundation of America President Cecile Richards called the decision an "unacceptable attack on basic health care that the vast majority of women rely on."

Richards said she would not allow President Trump to "roll back the progress women have made over the past century." The roll-back is expected to be challenged in court.
