NHRA Invades Monument Circle Ahead Of U.S. Nationals

Top Fuel Driver Antron Brown: "This is the big daddy race of them all."

INDIANAPOLIS -- Several drag racing fans crowded Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis for the NHRA Fan Fest Wednesday.

Several drivers and racing teams showed off their cars and signed autographs, as they prepare for drag racing's biggest event of the season in the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. Three-time Funny Car division winner John Force has been coming here for a long time.

"It's not about racing for championships. It's about entertaining all of you," Froce said at a press event on the steps of the Soldier's and Sailors Monument. "It's the greatest show on Earth. It's P.T. Barnum at 300 miles an hour!"

The U.S. Nationals are held every year at Lucas Oil Raceway as part of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Drivers will compete in four divisions: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro-Stock, and Motorcycles.

Many of the competing teams are based on "Nitro Alley" in Brownsburg. John Force is one of them and so is last year's Top Fuel division winner Antron Brown.

"My last name is Brown and I moved to Brownsburg," Brown said jokingly. "It was made for me. It was sittin' there saying 'come to Brownsburg,' and here I am. This is the big daddy race of them all."

Qualifying got underway Wednesday afternoon and the events will run everyday until the final rounds on Labor Day. The event will also feature many exhibition runs on the quarter-mile drag strip, cars run by jet engines, Pro-Mod models and many more will show off their speed.

Children under 12 are free at the gate.
