Top-25 College Football Game Capsules

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - T.J. Yeldon racked up 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace a potent rushing attack, as second-ranked Alabama took down West Virginia, 33-23, in the first-ever meeting between the programs from Georgia Dome. Derrick Henry added 113 yards and another score on 17 attempts for the Crimson Tide (1-0), while Blake Sims ended up 24-of-33 for 250 yards and one interception. Amari Cooper led all receivers with 12 receptions and racked up 130 yards for Alabama, which is seeking a third national title in the last four seasons. Clint Trickett ended up 29-of-45 for 365 yards and a TD pass to Kevin White for the Mountaineers (0-1). White collected 143 yards on nine grabs, while Mario Alford returned a kick 100 yards while adding 54 yards on five catches.

Final Score: (5) Ohio State 34, Navy 17

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - It took some time, but Ohio State's offense finally began to click under new quarterback J.T. Barrett and the fifth-ranked Buckeyes pulled away late for a 34-17 victory over Navy on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium. Ohio State (1-0) entered its third season under Urban Meyer with national championship hopes, then lost star quarterback Braxton Miller to a shoulder injury earlier this month and turned to Barrett. The redshirt freshman completed his first pass attempt, a 14-yard toss to Devin Smith to open the game, and his 80-yard TD strike to Smith in the third quarter put Ohio State on top for good. The Buckeyes went on to add a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to seal their 25th straight regular-season win and 15th consecutive season-opening victory. Barrett completed 12-of-15 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for 50 yards as Ohio State piled up 194 yards on the ground. Navy (0-1), which finished second in the nation in rushing last year during a 9-4 season, racked up 370 yards on the ground. Ryan Williams-Jenkins accounted for 118 on just seven carries, while quarterback Keenan Reynolds added 42. Reynolds threw the ball just four times and completed two for 20 yards.

Final Score: (7) UCLA 28, Virginia 20

Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Hundley threw for 242 yards and ran for a critical touchdown as seventh-ranked UCLA overcame a stiff test from Virginia to hold on for a 28-20 win at Scott Stadium. Hundley's score made it 28-17 late in the third quarter for a Bruins program with national title aspirations. Paul Perkins finished with 80 yards on 16 carries for UCLA (1-0), which scored three defensive touchdowns in the second quarter. Greyson Lambert made his first collegiate start at quarterback for the Cavaliers (0-1), but was benched late in the first half in favor of fellow redshirt sophomore Matt Johns after having two interceptions returned for touchdowns. Johns tossed touchdown passes in relief.

Final Score: (11) Stanford 45, UC Davis 0

Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Hogan threw three first half touchdowns and ran in another as No. 11 Stanford rolled to a 45-0 win over UC Davis to kick off its 2014 season. Hogan got to rest for the second half after building a commanding lead over the first 30 minutes. The senior co- captain completed 12-of-16 passes for 204 yards with an interception. Ty Montgomery returned a punt for a touchdown and was one of four players with a receiving score for Stanford (1-0), which is hoping to win its third straight Pac-12 conference championship. Christian McCaffrey, Michael Rector and tight end Austin Hooper also caught touchdowns. UC Davis (0-1), an FCS program, never got its offense going against the Cardinal. Quarterback London Lacy was intercepted twice and finished with just 54 yards passing, while Justin Williams and Colton Silveria gained 36 and 34 yards, respectively, on the ground.

Final Score: (17) Notre Dame 48, Rice 17

South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Everett Golson ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as No. 17 Notre Dame handed Rice a 48-17 loss in the season opener at Notre Dame Stadium. The last time Golson donned a Fighting Irish uniform was in the BCS title game against Alabama two seasons ago. He missed his entire sophomore campaign after the university suspended him the next fall for academic reasons and spent his hiatus practicing with a quarterback guru. The early results were promising, as Golson completed 14- of-22 attempts for 295 yards while accounting for 41 of the Irish's 281 rushing yards. Notre Dame (1-0), which is in the middle of another academic scandal, went 9-4 last season without Golson and was playing a Rice (0-1) program coming off a Conference USA title. The Owls lost most of their offensive threats from last season, however, and the untested Driphus Jackson was shaky in his first road start under center. Hampered by conservative play calling, Jackson passed for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception and gained a team-high 61 yards on the ground.

Final Score: (22) Nebraska 55, Florida Atlantic 7

Lincoln, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Tommy Armstrong had two touchdown passes and ran in one more as No. 22 Nebraska rolled to a 55-7 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday to open the season. Armstrong was 15-of-29 passing for 271 yards and added seven runs for 62 yards for the Cornhuskers (1-0), who went 9-4 last season and beat Georgia in the Gator Bowl. Ameer Abdullah finished the game with 232 yards on 21 carries and a score, while Terrell Newby added 16 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Jaquez Johnson was 6- for-12 for 61 yards and a score for the Owls (0-1), who won four in a row to end last season with a mark of 6-6.

Final Score: (24) Missouri 38, South Dakota State 18

Columbia, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Maty Mauk threw two of his three touchdown passes to Darius White as 24th-ranked Missouri opened the season with a 38-18 win over FCS foe South Dakota State. Russell Hansbrough had 126 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for the Tigers (1-0), who posted 12 victories and captured the SEC Eastern Division title last season. Zach Lujan completed 21-of-28 passes for 239 yards with one interception in place of South Dakota State starter Austin Sumner. Sumner suffered a right foot/ankle injury on a first-quarter scramble and is expected to miss significant time. Zach Zenner had two touchdown runs for the Jackrabbits (0-1).
