Yankees send McCann to concussion DL

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Yankees catcher Brian McCann will miss at least a week after sustaining a concussion during Friday's game against the Cleveland Indians.

McCann took a foul ball from the Indians' Mike Aviles off his face mask during the third inning of Friday's 10-6 New York win. He remained in the game and singled in his next at-bat, but was later replaced by Francisco Cervelli in the sixth inning.

After visiting a neurologist that confirmed the mild concussion, McCann was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list by the Yankees prior to Saturday's contest with Cleveland. Catcher Austin Romine was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to serve as the backup to Cervelli in the interim.

McCann, a seven-time All-Star with the Atlanta Braves who signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Yankees during the offseason, has hit .238 with 13 home runs and 49 RBI in 103 games thus far in 2014.

The Yankees also announced on Saturday that the team has released second baseman Brian Roberts. The veteran infielder was designated by assignment by New York following the club's acquisition of Stephen Drew from Boston at the July 31 trade deadline.
