The Lawrence Township School Board met Monday night to discuss options for cutting $3.2 million from next year's budget.

Our newsgathering partners at FOX 59 say one option given was to cut 170 teaching positions, which means class sizes would increase.

A second option means sixth graders would return to middle school, which creates a two-middle school system, effectively closing one school. That school would likely be Craig Middle School. That plan would save $3.2 to $3.5 million.

One parent told FOX 59 that she supports the second option, saying Craig Middle School is scheduled for renovations, and not making those renovations would save money.

Some parents were concerned that merging middle schools would give students less opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities such as sports and the arts.

Parents also expressed that a decision should be made soon, which could come as early as the next board meeting December 14.
