A new law signed by Governor Daniels this year provides funding that ensures every child can attend full-day kindergarten at no additional cost to the parents.
However, a national report says the state needs to also fund Pre-K education to ensure kids are ready for the classroom. The latest State Preschool Yearbook shows Indiana is one of 11 states that does not provide state funded Pre-School for three and four year olds.
Indiana Youth Institute president and CEO Bill Stanczykiewicz says that is a concern especially for parents who want to send their kids to a formal pre-school, but don't have the financial means to do so. He says it will be interesting to see if funding Pre-K education becomes a major issue with a new governor and the state legislature.
