A school consultant says there may be more than we know going on regarding the recent bullying case at an IPS high school.
Listen:
Darnell "Dynasty" Young, an openly gay student at Arsenal Technical High School, was expelled from school earlier this week after bringing a stun gun to school to fend off bullies. Young was given the stun gun by his mother who says she had done everything she could to to get the school to step in. Chuck Hibbert with Hibbert Safe School Consulting says he's not suprised at the expulsion because doesn't think there is a school in Indiana that wouldn't expel a student for bringing a weapon into the school, regardless of the student's motivation for doing so.
Hibbert says there isn't much that is known about the school's reaction to the situation because of student confidentiality laws. He says he hopes the school is looking further into the alleged bullying issue that caused Young to bring the stun gun to school in the first place.
Hibbert adds that all school districts need to do more to prepare teachers and administrators to deal with bullying issues before something like this happens again. He says sometimes school districts forget the role adults can play in these situations to help curb violence in schools.
