Indy's next big hotel and apartment development has marked a construction milestone.
Mayor Greg Ballard and downtown business leaders signed a steel beam, then watched a crane lift it into position in a topping-out ceremony at the Alexander Hotel, nestled between Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Eli Lilly headquarters on South Street.
The hotel in the upscale Dolce chain is scheduled to open in December. Chief Revenue Officer Barry Goldstein says the location near Lilly should draw business, but says he expects the surrounding neighborhood to grow -- he expects about two-thirds of the hotel's customers will be business travelers.
About a third of the hotel's 157 rooms are set aside for extended-stay customers.
The Alexander is the centerpiece of the CityWay development, formerly known as North of South. An apartment building will actually open first, in October. Restaurant, retail and office space will open along with the hotel, with the final piece of the development, a 75-thousand-square-foot Y-M-C-A, tentatively scheduled to break ground next summer or fall, and open a year or two later.
The hotel is named for Alexander Ralston, the city planner who laid out the original plan for Indy's downtown in the early 19th century.
