Democratic Party officials have unanimously voted to disqualify a would-be candidate for state school superintendent whose previous run for office was as a Republican.

The ruling against Melissa Ann Hicks eliminates the only contested race at Democrats’ state convention, and gives the nomination to Indianapolis teachers’ union leader Glenda Ritz. Delegates will make Ritz’s nomination official on Saturday.

Hicks ran for Fort Wayne City Council last year. It was the Republicans disavowing her then, because she’d been a registered Democrat until she filed to run.
