Storms Roll Through Central Indiana

7/20/2012

Much needed rain rolled through Central Indiana but it didn't come without any damage.

Lightning is to blame for a fire at the Lake Castleton Apartments on the city's northeast side. RTV6 reports six apartments were damaged by flames but no injuries were reported. One resident who lived nearby suffered smoke damage in his apartment and says he heard the lightning hit and a neighbor alerted him that the building had been struck.

The Fishers Fire Department responded to eight different calls of lightning strikes but no fires were reported. Two people were injured in a motorcycle crash. The victims were taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Firefighters in Westfield also responded to a lightning strike of a garage but no injuries were reported either.

Duke Energy reported as many as 6,000 customers without power following the storms. IPL reported as many as 3,000 customers in the dark.

RTV6 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Gregory reported 1.6 inches of rain on Indianapolis' northeast side. Thursday's rainfall brought the total July rainfall to .68 inches, preventing July 2012 from becoming the driest July on record in Indianapolis.
