A suspect is in custody after a shooting involving an IMPD officer Tuesday night.
Police say the officer attempted to make a traffic stop in the 4300 block of East 10th Street just after 6:00. A passenger in the vehicle, later identified as 22-year-old Coble Sterling of Indianapolis, fled the vehicle after being stopped.
Sterling hid behind a nearby dumpster and as the officer approached, Sterling appeared with a gun in his hand. The officer, fearing for his life, fired at Sterling but missed. Sterling then dropped the gun and was taken into custody.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Sterling is being questioned by detectives and police say he is likely to face preliminary charges in the near future.
