Becky Skillman will miss working on behalf of rural Indiana, but she says she is proud of the way she has advocated for rural residents during her time as Lieutenant Governor.

Skillman spoke at the Indiana Rural Summit at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre as she gets set to leave office less than two months from now. Her work actually began as a state senator, when Skillman says she helped pass a bill calling on Indiana to develop a strategy to give a boost to rural areas.  "My legislation passed and, guess what, I became Lieutenant Governor and I get to continue working on these issues that have been my long time passion."

While she got to work on her own plan when she ascended to the Lieutenant Governor's office as Mitch Daniels's running mate eight years ago, Skillman says her successor, Sue Ellspermann, will have more time to work on rural issues. Skillman says she and Daniels were busy in the early years of the administration, "we were facing a $700 million budget deficit, a state government that needed reorganization, and that's an understatement - I was there at the time, state government run in a series of silos with each agency running their own program," Skillman said.

One of the things Skillman is most proud of are her recent trips to foreign countries.  "We have small town mayors from 22 communities in Indiana that have sister city relationships with cities in China," Skillman said.  "Our agricultural industry has thrived from all the international relationships, but we are also taking seriously our responsibility to help feed the world."
