It's the dream of millions of kids, to be an athletic star in your hometown then at your state university, and win a national championship there before being drafted to the pros in the city you grew up in: Eriq Zavaleta is living that dream.
The Westfield native admits he's had a pretty good run lately. "Winning the national championship and everything that led up to that was an incredible experience. I did it with a lot of kids that I grew up with. To be able to bring that program, and that rich history back to prominence is an incredible thing. And then to turn around here and be back in Indianapolis for the draft, it's something that you could write up in a book, and it's something I could have only dreamed of."
Zavaleta is expected to be among the top picks in the MLS SuperDraft held at the Indiana Convention Center. Zavaleta says he's not even sure what position he will play. "I think anywhere I go I'll have a great experience and I think the coaching staff will make that decision for me. It's been a question that I've had to encounter for many years now and I'm ready to hone my craft in whatever position that might be."
Zavaleta says it's an exciting time for soccer in Indiana. The Hoosiers won their 8th national title, Indianapolis is the new home of an NASL team and Westfield is becoming a soccer mecca with it's Grand Park. Zavaleta says he hopes for his career to come full circle one day by playing on an MLS team in Indianapolis.
