Governor Pence and former Colts linebacker Gary Brackett are among about 70 volunteers who turned out for a Martin Luther King Day of Service in Indianapolis.
This is the second straight year the state has taken a direct role in organizing service projects to commemorate the King holiday. Volunteers tackled a variety of projects along the near-northside corridor named for King, from painting IPS School 44 and picking up trash to doing renovation work on a planned business incubator.
The volunteer turnout is about double the number who came out last year to help clear snow in the neighborhood.
The city and the Indiana Civil Rights Commission co-sponsored the event with Indiana Black Expo and Indy Parks.
