Conservation Day at the Statehouse

1/23/2013

Conservation groups gathered with lawmakers to try to drum up support for conservation-related bills before the legislature this session.

The Nature Conservancy Indiana State Director Mary McConnell says they have their eyes on two pieces of legislation this session. McConnell says the group is pushing for support of the Indiana Heritage Trust, which is the state's environmental license plate. McConnell says Hoosiers pay an extra 40 dollars for the plate, which generates about 1.2 million dollars per year. She says the General Assembly formerly matched the amount, but hasn't done so in recent years. The Nature Conservancy is hoping lawmakers use some of the state's surplus to match the license plate sales.

McConnell says conservation groups across the state are also asking for support of the Bicentennial Nature Trust. Governor Daniels founded the trust with 20 million dollars last year to commemmorate the state's bicentennial. McConnell says the state's park and forest system was established during the state's centennial, and she hopes for a re-committment to more state parks and forests in the bicentennial.
