Tax filing season officially kicks off this Wednesday (January 30th).

IRS Spokesman Luis Garcia says that's when they'll begin processing tax returns.  Garcia says the season is starting later due to tax law changes that Congress recently enacted.  He says Indiana has nearly three million tax filers and eight of ten of them will likely receive refunds.

Garcia says the majority of Indiana residents file returns through tax preparers.  He says filers should be careful when selecting preparers and avoid those who seek a percentage of their return.  He says filers should also be wary of those who offer large returns before knowing their individual tax situation.  He says reputable preparers should offer a menu of cost services upfront.

Garcia adds people should never trust email claiming to be from the IRS.  He says the IRS never sends out unsolicited email.  Garcia says such email comes from sites that are geared toward identity theft and people should delete them immediately.
