Environmentalists call it a major victory for clean air following a settlement agreement which calls for American Electric Power to stop burning coal by 2015 in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.
Jesse Kharbanda, Executive Director of the Hoosier Environmental Council, says this settlement will mean changes in how Indiana produces power.
There will be a shutdown of a coal unit in southeast Indiana at Tanners Creek. Kharbanda also says there is going to be a significant modernization of one of the largest coal plants in the entire continent in southwest Indiana at Rockport.
He says the changes will be especially important for "an area of the state that has had a disproportionate brunt of air pollution"
Kharbanda also foresees a change in how Indiana produces energy in the future as the costs of coal rises and alternative technologies become more economical.
