The thick black smoke that filled St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Wednesday morning caused more damage than initially thought. Indianapolis Fire Department arson investigators revised the damage estimate from $15,000 to $400,000.
Investigators have also ruled out all possible accidental causes for the small fire that started in the back of the church.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police (IMPD) detectives report a burglary alarm sounded just before the fire alarm, but they found no obvious signs of forced entry into the church. They say nothing appears to have been removed from the church.
The church was found in 1837.
