A Southside Indianapolis family is literally rising from the ashes following last November's house explosion in Richmond Hill.

Listen:

They're the first groundbreaking of a new home since the blast. Vicky Koerner and family broke ground on their new home in the same spot in the subdivision. Koerner says they're determined to rebuild and move into their new home which won't be ready until August at the earliest. Koerner says the last several months have been challenging.

She says the family was able to lease another home, but dealing with all of the fallout - including demolishing the remains of their old home and insurance adjustors - has been difficult. On the upside, Koerner says she'll be getting a new and improved home. She says it'll include a master bedroom on the first floor so that she and her husband won't have to walk up and downstairs all of the time.

Koerner says the explosion has brought the entire community together and many people know their neighbors, many of whom she says are heroes for the way they responded on November 10th. The blast killed John and Jennifer Longworth and destroyed dozens of homes. Three suspects face murder and arson charges.
