Indiana National Guard Bracing For Furloughs
The Indiana National Guard is gearing up for federal sequester furloughs.
Lt. Col. Cathy Van Bree says come June, 1,000 full-time guard staffers will be furloughed for one day per week for 14 weeks. Van Bree says the furloughs amount to a 20% pay cut for staffers. Van Bree says community relations support for the guard has also been affected. She says the guard will not conduct flyovers during the upcoming Indianapolis 500. She says other ceremonial flyovers and community events will also be impacted.
She says it comes down to saving money on fuel, transportation, ammunition, etc. However, Van Bree adds the guard maintains 14,000 service members and public safety won't be compromised.
