TRAFFIC: Weekend Jambalaya: Electric Bridge Slide (Boogie Woogie Woogie)

Indiana shows the future of bridge rebuilding, and more weekend fun stuff just around the corner

Hey there -

This week we’re experimenting.  It’s just like college - except with a bridge, or on a bridge.

It’s really nothing like college, but it’s completely awesome, as Indiana is conducting its first ever bridge slide over dry land.  Starting Friday night, westbound I-70 near Richmond will cut down to one lane so contractors can “slide” in a whole new bridge. If successful, we’ll have a better and more efficient way of rebuilding bridges.

So let’s get to it, including the other traffic stuff.

BRIDGE SLIDE

I think it's pretty cool - especially when considering where the technology is and where the technology could go.

The bridge slide is an innovative way to significantly cut down on work time during long term bridge construction projects.  Also, it’s the first bridge slide over dry land in Indiana, so cheers!

(The Milton-Madison Bridge slide was the longest bridge slide in North America. INDOT spearheaded the project while partnered with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet).

Starting Friday night, westbound I-70 - between U.S. 40 and State Road 227 - will be reduced to one lane. Eastbound I-70’s two lanes will be shifted to the south shoulder to accommodate the single lane of westbound 70, which will be diverted across the median.

**Sorry, still working on a way to easily explain this stuff without making your eyes bleed.  It'll get better.  Picture Rainbow Road from Mario Kart

For 13 days, this configuration will remain in place while the old bridge is chopped up and the new bridge is slid in.  Easy, right?  So much that eastbound I-70 will get a new bridge in the same location using the same technique in October.

The bad? Backups.  Lots of backups.  In fact, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is posting a detour for travelers who want to stay on their legs. U.S. 27 and Ohio Route 127 will get you started on each side of the bridge:

Also, State Road 121 (New Paris Pike) will close for a week below I-70 as the new bridge is slid into place.

**Sure, this pretty far east of Indianapolis, but it feels like a Hoosier innovation. Who knows, maybe we're developing technology that will eventually prevent year long bridge closures (*cough* Central Ave) and time consuming inconvenient bridge rebuild projects (south side I-65, anyone?).

AIRPORT

Bridge on Ronald Reagan Pkwy/Ameriplex Pkwy over I-70 is getting its back cracked this weekend. The bridge will stay open, but the inside lanes will be affected. Just a quick note if you're coming from Avon, Camby, etc. to catch a plane.

WEEKEND WORK ON I-70 AROUND POST

@WIBCTraffic is getting a lot of complaints about the delays on I-70 east of town.  I understand the frustration, but show me where else such a panoramic view of Post Rd. is available? Relaxing on I-70 during gridlock, sipping on an empty coffee cup, and enjoying the urban haze over the Steak N' Sheak. Yeah buddy, that's living. Check your bucket list - you know it’s on there.

Starting Friday at 9pm, both northbound and southbound ramps from I-465 to eastbound I-70 will close until Monday at 6am.  Also, the right lanes will close on I-70 in both directions for the same duration.  At least two lanes will remain open in each direction of I-70.

**In dealing with these ramp closures, hop off I-465 at Washington St (coming from the south) or Pendleton Pike (coming from the north).  Pick up Post Rd. and all is well.

THE BEST OF THE REST

The Indians are playing playoff baseball through Friday, and hopefully Sunday. There’s also another monster country concert up at Klipsch.  Shall we take a look?

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS PLAYOFF BASEBALL

The Indians host the Durham Bulls, who are managed by Susan Sarandon or someone.  I loved the pitcher/catcher scene where they joked about wedding gifts until Roy Hobbs spit chewing tobacco in their face. All baseball movies with Kevin Costner need a corn field and a farm from yesterlore.  Tin Cup didn’t deserve a happy ending.

Dollar menu night and fireworks Friday at Victory Field. They're down 0-2 in a best-of-three.

**First pitch at 7:15. Expect backups on West St. and around Victory Field pre and post game.

ED SHEERAN: NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

**Show start at 7:30pm at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Watch for stop and go traffic on the east side of downtown.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

CANAL WALK

If the White River in downtown Indy ever becomes more than a nesting place for testicle eating fish and a burial ground for severed torsos, it would owe much appreciation to its more serene younger brother, the canal.  So much good happens here, and it’s one of Indy’s best kept secrets.

The Indianapolis Heart Walk & 5K Run is another awesome event on the canals.  It will cause streets around the White River and the Canal Walk to be partially blocked from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.  If you have time, give it a run - or walk.

COLTS KICKOFF

Bless their hearts, try as they might.

**The east block of Georgia Street will be closed Sunday from 5 a.m. – 1 a.m. This is not a home game, but we're hailing a traffic alert for the hundreds of fans that’ll be passed out in the gutter somewhere before halftime. Avoid - don’t add to the misery.

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS PLAYOFF BASEBALL

Hopefully, the Indians didn’t get swept and are playing baseball Saturday night, but no biggie if they didn’t. I’ll count by blessings that at least one Indy team made the playoffs.

**First pitch at 7:05.  Expect heavier delays on the west side of downtown before and after the game.  It’s Saturday, take your time.

Klipsch: Chris Stapleton, The All-American Road Show

This is a makeup concert from June.  Since I don’t know much about Chris Stapleton, I once again turned to the Traffic Center’s country music expert - my sister Biscuits:

Biscuits: “He has some good songs but he doesn’t really turn me on.”

Me: “Thanks. Great to know.”

Biscuits: “You’re welcome!”

I really feel like this is the weakest portion of the blog.  I’ll work on it.

**Campus Parkway is going to busy in Noblesville, with a shotime at 7:00pm. It's I-69, so leave now.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

U2: THE JOSHUA TREE TOUR

**Bucket List, CHECK. Show starts at 7:30pm. Expect Colts like traffic around Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday evening.

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS PLAYOFF BASEBALL

A gorgeous day to watch the Indians - hopefully.

**First pitch at 1:35pm.  Watch out after the game for Colts fans pregaming downtown for the 4:05 kick in Los Angeles.

Keep an eye on @WIBCTraffic and the Weekend Jambalaya for updates on construction projects.  We’re getting close to the home stretch, and several will be wrapping up over the next month or two.

Have an excellent weekend while keeping your fingers crossed for your favorite floridians.

And thank you for being a part of this.
